It is my pleasure to welcome you all to our Oman’s First Psychiatric Conference in partnership with Arab Gulf Psychiatrist Assosiation, AGPA.
For several years, modern psychiatric services have not played a role in the care of people with psychiatric disorders. Mental illness was largely the domain of traditional healers, and many people with psychiatric illness were unlikely to seek psychiatric help until they have reached an advanced stage of irreversible pathology or until ‘treatment shopping’ from complementary and alternative medicine has failed to provide any benefit. More recently, this region has witnessed the emergency of psychiatric disorders. This has stem from the fact that this region is not immune to vagaries of psychiatric disorder. We are also witnessing the growth of psychiatric services and acceptance of psychological explanation of emotional distress.

The format of the meeting comprises key note presentations from both international speakers and collegues from the Gulf area . we will also have short research papaers presentation and workshops in topics related to Mental illness.

I am hoping that this conference would be a springboard to heighten further awareness to psychiatric disorders in the region. This conference will not be possible without your participant with some of you who are traveling from place. Also, this conference was made possible with generous contribution of our sponsors.
