Dr Edwin M. Mapara BScHb, MBChB (Zambia), DTM & H (South Africa), DLSHTM, MSc. (England) is a medical doctor and Public Health Specialist with a speciality in the management of HIV/AIDS in developing countries. With over twenty years HIV/AIDS experience in the field, in Zambia, Botswana, South Africa and now UK, he is passionate about the use of colour images and medical illustrations to teach, share experiences and engage audiences in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support initiatives. He is currently working with Brent & Harrow Community Health Projects, London, UK where Pictures in AIDucation has already made an impact. He believes strongly that Health Promotion and Public Health have missed the boat by not utilising colour images/medical illustrations to empower and engage the local communities.

Presented here, is the first of four sets of 24 slides that Dr Mapara has used both in Africa and the UK to teach non-clinicians about HIV/AIDS. Created for TALC by Dr Cathy Vaughan and Dr Wendy Holmes, HIV Infection - Virology and Transmission (Africa) together with its clinical script, describes the basic facts about the virus, its pathogenesis and transmission. Accompanying this, Dr Mapara shares the Pictures in AIDucation experience of how he communicated selected slides to a lay audience, the metaphors he used to convey complex biological processes and the discussions that the slides stimulated.
