Getting started
- Select a chapter from the drop-down menu in the upper-left corner of the window to view the images from the selected chapter.

- You can navigate through multiple pages of images in a selected chapter by clicking on the navigation controls in the upper-right corner of the window or using the keyboard shortcuts, Command/Control + (right arrow) to go to the next page and Command/Control + (left arrow) to go to the previous page.

- The Zoom tool is active by default, click on an image to zoom to a larger view and to see the associated figure legend. The active tool is highlighted with a red border. The selected image is highlighted with a red border and title. The Zoom tool can be accessed by pressing Command/Control + Z. Click on the image again to "unzoom".

- The selected image can be copied and pasted into other applications by clicking on the "Copy Image" button or with the keyboard shortcut Command/Control + C.

- The legend for the selected image can be copied and pasted into other applications by clicking on the "Copy Legend" button or with the keyboard shortcut Command/Control + L.

- To queue an image to be added to your catalog, click on the Selection tool and click on an image. Queued images will be transferred from the queue to the catalog when you view the catalog by clicking the "Catalog" button or pressing Command/Control + T. The Selection tool (arrow) remains active until the page is flipped, the Zoom tool is selected or a new chapter is selected from the drop-down menu. The Selection tool can be accessed by pressing Command/Control + E.

- You may queue images from multiple chapters by choosing another chapter from the drop-down menu and selecting them with the "Selection" tool.
- To view the images that have been added to the catalog, click on the "Catalog" button to the left.

- You can navigate through multiple pages of your catalog by clicking on the navigation controls in the upper-right corner of the window or using the keyboard shortcuts, Command/Control + (up arrow) to go to the next page and Command/Control + (down arrow) to go to the previous page.

- To save your catalog, click on the "Save As" button and choose a destination folder and name for your project. The dialog box will start in the default "Projects" directory where you can create a directory for each new catalog, for example: "C:\Program Files\Basic Histology\Projects\Tutorial\My_Image_Catalog.ctg" for Windows users and "Macintosh:Applications:Basic Histology:Projects:Tutorial:My Image Catalog.ctg" for Macintosh users.
- A dialog will appear asking if you would like to save the images at this time, select "Yes" if you have finished adding images to your catalog or would like to begin using the images. If you select "No," the catalog is saved and can be opened and modified in future sessions. You will be prompted to save the images and legends each time the catalog is saved.
- Additional subdirectories will be created to store the images, "images", and the legends, "legends." It is very important that the catalog file, "catalog filename.ctg" and the subdirectories maintain there relative paths.
- Selecting an image in the catalog will display a larger version of the image, the associated figure legend and will enable the "Save Image" and "Remove Image" buttons. Saving and removing images is only available in the "Catalog".

- "There is not enough free space on the selected drive, <your drive>, to save the images and legends." "An additional <additional space needed> MB is needed, or you may lower the amount of free disk space to maintain ( <user defined free space to maintain> MB) by selecting 'Setup'."
You will need to establish enough free space on the drive to maintain your defined minimum or lower your minimum free space in the 'Setup' section of the application (Caution must be taken so the drive is not compromised by exceeding a safe capacity - minimum 10% of the total drive size should remain free). Select 'Save As' overwriting the catalog file and you will be prompted to save the images and legends again.
- "Saving these images and legends will leave your drive, <your drive>, dangerously low on free space: <amount that would be left free if you continue> MB. Do you wish to continue?" Buttons: Yes, No

- "Would you like to save the images and legends in this catalog to your project folder?" Buttons: Yes, No
Yes: The application will save the images and legends of the current catalog to your hard drive.
No: The catalog file has been saved but the images and legends will not be saved.
This is beneficial if you have not completed the catalog and may be removing images from the catalog later.
This application will not remove files from your hard drive.
- "There has been an error saving the catalog. <error message>" Buttons: Retry, Cancel
Retry: Another attempt will be made to save the catalog file.
Cancel: An attempt will be made to save the catalog file with a "z" appended to the filename.
If successful, you will be able to remove the original, if one had been successfully saved before, and rename and use this file .
- "The amount of free disk space is less than the amount set in your preferences."
The amount of free space on your hard drive has fallen below the amount of free space you set to maintain. This is typical if the amount of free space is very low or the preference is set very high and does not take into consideration the fluctuation of free space caused by other applications and activities outside of the scope of this application.
